Routes to Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro, located in Tanzania, is the highest mountain in Africa and one of the most popular trekking destinations in the world. There are several routes to the summit, each with its own unique features and challenges. Here are the main Kilimanjaro routes:

Routes to Kilimanjaro

1. Marangu Route: This is the most popular and oldest route to the summit. It is also known as the “Coca Cola” route due to the availability of soft drinks along the way. The route is relatively easy and has gradual slopes, making it ideal for beginners. It takes five to six days to complete, and accommodation is in huts along the way.

2. Machame Route: This is the most scenic and popular route to the summit. It is known as the “Whiskey” route because it is more challenging than the Marangu route. The Machame route is steeper, and the terrain is more rugged, but it provides stunning views of the mountain. It takes six to seven days to complete, and accommodation is in tents.

3. Rongai Route: This is the only route that starts on the north side of the mountain. The Rongai route is less crowded than the other routes, and it offers a more remote and unspoiled wilderness experience. The terrain is relatively gentle, but the final ascent is steep. It takes six to seven days to complete, and accommodation is in tents.

4. Lemosho Route: This is the longest and most scenic route to the summit. It starts on the west side of the mountain and passes through some of the most remote and pristine areas of Kilimanjaro. The Lemosho route is less crowded than the other routes, and it offers excellent acclimatization opportunities. It takes seven to nine days to complete, and accommodation is in tents.

5. Umbwe Route: This is the most challenging and least-used route to the summit. It is a steep and direct route, and it requires good physical fitness and mountaineering experience. The Umbwe route is not recommended for beginners or those who have not acclimatized properly. It takes six to seven days to complete, and accommodation is in tents.

Choosing the right Kilimanjaro route depends on your level of fitness, experience, and personal preference. All the routes offer different experiences, but they all lead to the same ultimate goal: the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
